Kingley Vale Nature Reserve – the reserve boasts one of the finest yew forests in Western Europe, including a grove of ancient trees that are some of the oldest living things in Britain. It’s a fantastic place to reconnect with nature and each other and realise the outstanding natural beauty of this area. The view on top of the vale looking out to the Isle of White and Chichester Harbour is truly unbeatable.
Jack and Jill Windmills – an iconic sight on the South Downs, the perfectly preserved 19th century Jack & Jill windmills are an enduring West Sussex sight that should not be missed. From 2-5pm on most Sundays between May and September, you can seize the opportunity to step back more than 100 years and take a look around Jill, an authentic working corn windmill – the kids will love it.
Chanctonbury Ring – brace yourself for the climb up to the South Downs Way, which takes you through ancient woodlands dotted with rope swings. On some days the woodland has an eerie feel, particularly if you believe the stories of pagan rituals and pilgrimages. Once you reach the South Downs Way turn right and walk towards the famous ring of beech trees that surround this prehistoric hill fort.
Bignor Roman Villa – situated in the heart of the South Downs National Park, here you can walk amongst Roman remains whilst admiring the beautiful mosaics that have been perfectly preserved. In its heyday, the Roman Villa at Bignor took in 70 buildings and would have covered four acres. As the sun goes down, make your way to Bignor Hill to watch the sunset over the South Downs – perfect.
Weald and Downland Living Museum – escape to the stunning West Sussex countryside at the Weald and Downland Living Museum. This quirky, unique attraction for all the family is like stepping back in time to a bygone era. Expect to see traditional arts and crafts in a unique natural setting, which tells the fascinating story of people who lived and worked in this region over a 950-year period.
Petworth House – dominating the historic town of Petworth – a haven for antique lovers – is the beautiful Petworth House and Deer Park. This grand 700-acre estate and stately mansion houses and impressive collection of artworks by greats such as Turner, Reynolds and Van Dyck. You can also explore the vast deer park, landscaped by ‘Capability’ Brown.
Wolstonbury Hill – the circular walk to Wolstonbury Hill, situated in Clayton near Pyecombe, takes in woodland, fields, country tracks, bridleways and stunning views. The ancient slopes are a designated Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) and in spring time you’ll find carpets of bluebells and wild garlic in the woodland nestling at the bottom of the slopes.
Knepp Castle Estate – this 3,500 acre estate near Horsham, home to the largest rewilding projectin lowlandEurope, offers something for all the family, including Dawn Safaris. Expect to see roe deer, red deer, stoats, weasels, foxes, badgers, Exmoor ponies and longhorn cattle if you’re lucky. You can also stay on the estate and sleep under the stars deep in the West Sussex countryside.
