Watersports for young explorers

West Sussex is a haven for a huge range of watersports for families and children. From sailing to surfing, we have a watersports experience for all ages.

Whilst we know you treasure the time you have with your little ones, we know that many of you welcome a little child-free time during your breaks.

Sam is a busy working mum, who enjoys coastal holidays with her partner and his two children: “I love family holiday time. It is always great to spend a week away with the whole gang trying out new things. However, I also think a little bit of mum time during a break goes a long way to creating family harmony. So, before I plan our week away, I like to do a bit of research on what activities are available for the children to have their own mini adventures”.

So, we’ve rounded up some of the top watersports experiences for the young explorer in your life, including solo adventures and experiences for all the family.

The Kayak Coach, Ashurst

Solo: If your kids are keen to get out on the water, drop them off for a two-hour kids-only kayaking experience. They’ll learn all the basics of paddle and control, general safety and, most importantly, have a lot of fun on a mini adventure, playing games and taking part in challenges.

Family: Perhaps your family’s idea of a great day out involves making a splash and, if that’s the case, a two-hour introductory session is ideal. You’ll have mastered the basics in no time, meaning you’ll be out on the lake playing games in no time.

The Adur Centre, Shoreham-by-Sea

Solo: As the October term break approaches, why not consider booking your kids onto the non-residential Venturedays holiday camp? Not only will they spend their days learning exciting new skills and enhancing their confidence on the water, they’ll come away with special memories and new friends.

Family: Keen to take on something new together? Families can book onto a multi-activity day of canoeing, kayaking, rafting, climbing, aeroball, low ropes and archery to really get a taste of adventure and discover their hidden talents.

Chichester Watersports, Chichester

Solo: If you could do with kicking back and unwinding somewhat, Chichester Watersports has the perfect facilities. Your little ones can run off their energy on the inflatable waterpark as you observe with a coffee on the outdoor decking.

Family: That’s not to say you can’t join in! Plenty of families enjoy taking to the waterpark together for an hour of exhilaration. Alternatively, you might want to hire out a paddleboard or kayak or try out some of the inflatable rides.

2XS, Chichester

Solo: If your youngest explorers are keen to get on the water but you don’t know where to start, have no fear! 2XS have Little Rippers windsurfing and surfing courses designed especially for 5-7 year olds in safe lagoon areas, so they can get straight in and learn the basics.

Family: Make waves together with a family surf lesson at stunning West Wittering beach. Together you’ll learn the basics of safety, handling and balance, before paddling out into the waves and popping up on the surfboard in no time at all!

Cobnor Activities Centre, Chidham

Solo: October half term, often mild and sunny, is a great time to be outdoors. Cobnor’s multi-activity programme for children (8-13yrs) means you can drop your young adventurer off for the day knowing they will be busy learning new skills from archery and mountain biking, to low ropes and climbing. If the weather is right, they may also get out on the water to do kayaking or sailing. Multi-activity days provide a perfect opportunity for independent confidence-building and a chance to make new friendships.

Family: Looking to do something with the whole family? Cobnor has something to offer all levels of experience and confidence. Whether it’s a family sailing day (weather permitting) or a land-based family adventure of climbing and abseiling, the memories will last a lifetime.
